Background
English Bridge Education & Development (EBED) is a charity registered with the Charity Commission.
The charity has two public benefit objectives:
- the furtherance of duplicate bridge as an activity which enriches the life of all
- a specific aim to foster duplicate bridge among those in full-time education.
We believe that bridge brings with it important benefits in terms of fostering social interaction, as well as supporting the use of mathematical reasoning and the application of logic.
As signalled in its 2013-2018 strategic plan, the English Bridge Union, the governing body for duplicate bridge in England, transferred its education activities to the new charity. In addition, the EBU Youth and Education Trust and the 1991 Educational Trust for British Bridge have now been closed and their activities subsumed by EBED.
We welcome the support of everyone who wants to help secure the future of bridge and encourage more people to start playing. You can help us by sharing your knowledge, ideas and enthusiasm or by making a donation, to help make a difference to society around us.

Projects
Our existing initiatives include the training and support for more bridge teachers, providing those teachers with support, as they begin their teaching, and enhanced range of materials to provide a smooth path from novice to player. Our Youth activities pave the way for children from primary school onwards to begin learning and playing.
We are also developing a number of initiatives which support our public benefit objectives, including:
- The development of an Accelerated Learning Program which will offer a “fast route” to getting novice recruits to a standard where they can play with confidence at a duplicate bridge club
- Provision of Director Training, principally aimed at those seeking the Club Director level qualification
- An integrated approach towards bridge for those in full-time education, built around our Junior Awards Scheme/li>
- Provision of Junior Bridge Camps for young people
