EBED and the EBU are working jointly with the EBU to have more universities active with their own
Bridge Societies/Clubs. Over a number of years there has been a decline that we wish to halt and
turn around.
We are trying the following approach:
1. Identifying an enthusiast lead amongst the students. Initially they tend to be youth squad
members or the offspring of known players but this will need to be widened as we go on
2. Offer them an individual award of £1000 in staged payments for meeting set criteria in
establishing a new university club. This will also be an “Award” which they can subsequently put on
their CV
3. Offer to fund and operationally support a “Tasty Taster” which is a bridge taster session for
students with free food and beer as an added inducement to attend and experience our game.
Existing player students also welcomed, potentially as helpers
4. Offer free learning materials; lessons; equipment; EBU club membership; training; Freshers’ (and
Refreshers’) Fair support; other help from the EBU Club Liaison Officer
5. Involve the local county and local affiliated club in this support and in helping to identify contacts
with universities. Many CBAs have Youth Officers
6. We also wish to help existing university clubs thrive and have initiatives there already and are
keen to discover more where we can give help. We are building contacts
7. Learn as we progress and adapt as necessary
The group working on this from EBED are Richard Croot and Ian Sidgwick; from the EBU Adrian
Darnell and Mike Hornung. Some other trustees, directors and staff will also be in direct support.
